macOS 10.11 El Capitan - End of Life

macOS El Capitan no longer supported by Apple

In keeping with Apple's release cycle, macOS 10.11 El Capitan is no longer receiving security updates as of August 2018. El Capitan was replaced by Sierra 10.12, High Sierra 10.13 and the current release, macOS 10.14 Mojave.

As a result SCS Computing Facilities (SCSCF) is phasing out software support for all computers running macOS 10.11 El Capitan and will end support on October 31, 2019.

What do I need to do?

If you have an SCS-supported computer still running macOS 10.11 El Capitan, you have the following options:

If your Mac meets the hardware requirements established by Apple, the macOS Mojave installation package will be available through Self Service on your SCS-supported Mac. It is a requirement to install ESET Endpoint Security first and then launch the Mojave installation package in Self Service.
If you would like to request an upgrade to Mojave performed by our technicians, or do not see the macOS Mojave installation package in Self Service, please submit an upgrade request.
If your computer is being replaced with a newer computer running a supported operating system or simply is not needed, please submit a request to remove software support from your old Apple computer if no longer used.

Please note: if you choose not to upgrade your computer, it will not receive security patches or functionality updates and our ability to troubleshoot issues will be limited. SCSCF software support charges will be canceled automatically as of November 1, 2019. Additionally, computers identified as security risks may be blocked from the CMU network by the Information Security Office (ISO).

Expect Sierra support to end in 2019

Later this year, Apple is expected to  introduce a new replacement for 10.14 Mojave, Sierra will be the third oldest version and will cease to be supported.  As a result, SCSCF will stop providing software support for all computers running macOS 10.12 Sierra on October 31st, 2019

If you would like to upgrade your computer yourself, you can use the Self Service AppSelf Service has an installation package available to upgrade from Sierra (and newer) to Mojave. Please see Mojave support details before upgrading.

If you do not see this package available to you, please contact us, as there may be conflicting or incompatible software/hardware conditions on your computer.
