Introduction to SCS Computing

Welcome to the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University!

This portal provides information to help new users get started and gain familiarity with the SCS environment and the services provided by SCS Computing Facilities (SCSCF). In SCSCF, we support the SCS community and SCS-owned computing equipment. We are also happy to act as liaisons to help address any issues you may have that involve computing outside of SCS.

Most departments in the School of Computer Science will provide incoming faculty, staff and Ph.D. students with a desktop or a laptop computer that is supported by SCSCF. You are also welcome to use privately-owned (non-CMU) computers, mobile devices, and other equipment within the SCS environment, but please note that our support for these devices is limited.

The SCS Environment

SCS Network

To connect to the SCS wired network, you must register your device. There is no firewall between the SCS network and the internet, therefore hosts on our network are constantly scanned for security vulnerabilities.

CMU Wireless Network

The campus wireless network is administered and maintained by campus Computing Services. While SCS Computing Facilities is not responsible for the campus wireless, we can help verify configuration settings.

SCS Accounts

An SCS account is necessary to access some of the core services, infrastructure, and resources we offer that are specific to the SCS community. This account is in addition to the Andrew ID and password provided by campus Computing Services.
