Computing Services: Access changes to relay.andrew.cmu.edu

What is happening:

On July 2, 2024, Computing Services restricted access to the relay.andrew.cmu.edu service, which sends emails on behalf of campus network devices. Access is now restricted to campus IP addresses that have sent emails through the service over the past month.

Why was this change made?

This change was made to safeguard the university and its resources. Recently, attackers were able to misuse the email system to send phishing emails targeting the CMU community and other organizations.

What action do I need to take?

Contact the Computing Services Help Center if:

  • You are adding a new device that requires the relay service.
  • You have questions about a current device that uses the relay service.
  • You were configured for the SCS legacy host, smtp.srv.cs.cmu.edu. This was an alias of relay.andrew.cmu.edu, and you will need to request an exception for your system.

Have questions?

If you have any questions about this change, please contact the Computing Services Help Center at 412-268-4357 or send mail to it-help@cmu.edu.
