Connect via VPN to Receive Windows Updates

Remote Windows Domain Access

Date:

On-going

Services Affected:

Windows, SCS Active Directory Domain Authentication, Microsoft Updates

Details

As communicated last month, SCS Computing Facilities made security changes our infrastructure. With these changes, we now require all of our remote users with SCS-managed Windows computers to connect to our network using virtual private networking (VPN).

Take Action

Use your Cisco AnyConnect VPN client to connect to the campus network. This connection will ensure that your Windows computer can retrieve updates. Many, if not most SCS Windows computers have the Cisco AnyConnect client installed and ready for use. For more information about Microsoft Updates or VPN in our environment, visit our Microsoft updates page.

One, 4-hour VPN session a week (minimum)

You need to log in to the VPN when using your computer to allow for security policy and critical system updates. To allow for uninterrupted update downloads, a minimum 4 hour VPN session should take place weekly. This is a minimum, but we encourage you to use your VPN connection as often as possible.

Download & Install Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

  1. Download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  2. Double-click the downloaded file to run the installer.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install.
  4. Uncheck all the boxes except VPN for Installation Type.

Connecting to the CMU network via VPN

  3. Type vpn.cmu.edu and click Connect.
