Critical Microsoft Updates
Microsoft has released critical security patches for products like Windows, Edge, and Office.
What do I need to do?
All SCS Windows computers have new updates available which must be applied to appropriately patch the operating system. Review the system notification area of the Windows taskbar for system update notifications and apply any pending updates.
Please Note: In June of 2021 SCS Computing Facilities migrated Windows 10 Andrew domain workstations to Intune co-management with Windows Update for Business. This new update method does not require VPN for Microsoft updates. Those still using Software Center to install updates should refer to these instructions, or contact SCS Computing Facilities for assistance.
Updating via Settings
Below is the manual method to check for updates. Updates install automatically.
- Open Settings.
- Click on the Windows Menu, also known as the Start Menu.
- Search for “Settings”.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Click Check for updates.
- Once completed, please restart your computer.
Note: It is important that your computer stay on during the update process. Laptops should be plugged into their power supply or dock before proceeding. Loss of power or interruption of patch installation can cause operating system corruption and affect functionality.
Optional Windows 11 Update
For supported Windows 10 devices, SCS Computing has released an optional update to Windows 11. Eligible devices will see this update in the Windows Update section of their Settings app. To check your devices for the Windows 11 update:
- Open Settings.
- Click on the Windows Menu, also known as the Start Menu.
- Search for “Settings”.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Check for the Windows 11 Download and Install option seen below,
- Once the download and installation has completed, please restart your computer.
Note: This process takes around 1 hour to complete, during which time the machine will remain useable. SCS recommends having a backup of your data before initiating the Windows 11 upgrade. For more information about this update: https://computing.cs.cmu.edu/desktop/microsoft-windows-11-updates
